FAQs?

There are many advantages of having an automatic garage door, we have written a blog about it here. They provide convenience and safety to homeowners and businesses as well as protection from both weather and unwanted visitors. Automatic garage doors can also add to the kerbside appeal and value of your home.

At Melbourne Garage Doors, we offer a wide range of styles, including timber/wood-look garage doors, Colourbond steel garage doors, sectional garage doors, custom garage doors, panel lift garage doors and more. Other considerations are the colour and finish, if you’d like any windows, if so, the size of the windows, and whether or not the door is insulated. It is important for your new garage door to blend with the architecture of your premises so it complements the home rather than it conflicting with the existing aesthetics.

Garage doors that properly installed and maintained are indeed quiet, but for garage doors to remain quiet and operating well, a regular maintenance schedule should be maintained. We offer garage door maintenance packages to ensure your garage door will last in top condition for many, many years to come.

While most doors can be installed with 3.66m to 4.57m of headroom, plus an additional 60cm +/- for an electric opener, headroom also depends on what’s needed.

If your garage door is not closing properly, check to see if the there are any obstructions that are preventing your garage door to close properlyOther reasons may be due to the sensors being blocked, remote device needing a battery change and others. If your door is still not closing, it could be caused by a faulty motor, faulty remote or switch, or simply debris stuck in the rails. Whatever the reason, if you cannot pinpoint what it is, it may be best to call our team at Melbourne Garage Doors to come check it out. Call us on 03 97551962 or email us at: sales@melbournegaragedoors.com

If your door is squeaking, the rollers and bearings may need to be lubricated, but there can be other reasons for example:

  • Lack of proper maintenance of your garage door
  • Misalignment of the shutters, rails or other components of your garage door
  • Faulty motor or transmission of your garage door

To prevent this from occurring and to keep your garage door investment safe, we recommend to undertake a regular garage door service. You can do this yourself, or for a low cost, we can come out and perform these tasks for you. The garage door service would typically include: cleaning your garage doors, applying new lubricant, checking motor speeds, checking and adjusting any moving mechanisms and more.

At Melbourne Garage Doors we conduct inspections and tune-ups to avoid these problems.

Grinding sounds are typically caused by worn rollers or wheels that have separated from the shaft. In this case, we would recommend replacing the rollers.

Repairing your garage door will typically cost you less than replacing it. The price for such a service will mainly depend on the condition of the door itself. If you intend to replace your door, the price will depend on the type, size, and material of the garage door you choose. Here are rough estimates that you can use for planning purposes, but an accurate quotation can be arranged through our FREE Measure and Quote service.

  • Single roller garage door: From $700 to $1550
  • Double roller garage door: From $1450 to $2200
  • Single sectional garage door: From $900 to $2500
  • Double sectional garage door: From $1450 to $4800
  • Custom garage door: Custom $

Note: To get an accurate price, measurements of your garage door have to be taken, the type you need, the material that will be used and if any additional support mechanisms are needed to support the new garage door. So, contact us at Melbourne Garage Doors to get a more accurate price of the garage door based on what you need. Remember we have a Free Measure and Quote service, with no obligation to proceed.

The cost of repairs depend on what is needed to be done, what parts need to be replaced and the amount of labour involved. Sometime, if a garage door is beyond being able to be repaired and or the costs of repairing exceed the cost for the new garage door, we will advise you accordingly so you can make the decision accordingly from there.

Quoting the price for you is free, we don’t charge a single penny for that. So, you can ask any of our customer support staff as many questions as you wish, all at no cost.

Yes! If you have a particular design of the garage door that you need, you can please contact us with your design, and we shall send you a quote for that. We have good designs for garage doors, but we also give our customers the freedom to think of the designs they would love to see in their garage if they wish.

Security is always our number one priority while making garage doors for our customers. It is for this reason that we make the doors using some of the strongest materials available in the market. Because most of the garage doors we make are automated, locking happens automatically, and immediately the garage door gets into the closing position.

On average, garage doors last 15 to 30 years or even more. It all depends on the type of garage door you chose to install, how you maintain it, the weather conditions of your area, and many more factors. We always give as much information as we can to our customers to help them improve the durability of their garage doors.

You can measure the dimensions of your garage door using a tape measure. However, we recommend using a technician to help you get accurate ones to avoid wasting time and money.

Yes, we do install the garage doors if the customer needs us to do so. However, if you have a technician that you trust, we will let you use that one. We recommend using technicians who have the relevant expertise in working on garage doors. Using an armature technician will not only affect the performance of your garage door but will also affect durability.

The time it takes to design and fabricate your door is anywhere between 1 week to 2 weeks. It depends mainly on the number of pending orders we have and the complexity of the design for your garage door. When you place your order, our team will give you the estimated date when you should expect to have the garage door ready for installation at your house.

Once our team is on your site, it will take about 3 to 4 hours to have your garage door installed. This time is however not fixed and may vary based on the conditions at your site. If you use an armature technician, it will even take more time to have the door installed.

Manual garage doors are cheaper and easier to maintain. However, they are not convenient more so, if you have to open the door a couple of times during the day. Automatic doors are more expensive, but they give you convenience while opening and closing. If you can afford it, we recommend getting an automatic garage door over manual ones.

The most popular material used in garage doors is steel, and it so for a reason. Steel is stronger, cheaper, and tougher than other material alternatives available. Aluminum is also an alternative that is light, less corrosive than steel, though it is not as strong. It is also way more expensive than steel. Other material alternatives used in garage doors include plastic and wood. However, these are not ideal for most people.

We do offer various ranges of insulation capabilities based on what the customer wants. For both sectional and roller garage doors, the level of insulation we offer depends on what the customer needs. We usually recommend having a properly insulated garage door especially if the garage is attached to your house. Proper insulation will reduce the amount of heat entering or leaving the house.

Besides security for your car and property, your garage door can also help you save money on the costs of heating and cooling your house if they are properly insulated. This is because, with proper insulation, there will be minimal heat exchange, which reduces the energy required to cool or heat your house. So, if you live in a place that needs a lot of cooling during summer and heating during winter, getting a garage door that is well insulated is a good idea.

We major in sectional and roller automatic garage doors. We also make custom garage doors that we designed based on what the customer wants. The type of door you choose should largely depend on how much you are willing to spend, the space you have in your garage, and the level of insulation you need your garage to have.

Both the sectional and roller garage doors open vertically. However, they have a couple of differences. The sectional garage doors do not roller over while they are being opened, they just spread horizontally on your garage ceiling. On the other hand, roller garage doors just roll over into a track on top of the door when they are being opened. Because sectional garage doors have fewer sections, they tend to offer better insulation and security than the roller garage doors.

The color of the garage door you choose should largely depend on the overall design of your house. The colors used on the rest of the house are also important while determining the color of your garage door. For most people, dark colors like black will always match the house since most houses are painted lighter colors like white and cream. However, you can choose any color that you would like, and we shall quote for you accordingly.

Yes, it is possible to change the color of paint for your garage door. While changing paint is possible, we recommend you don’t use oil-based paints as they more flammable, peel off after a short while, and not as durable. Late paint is always the best alternative for garage doors.

The motor you need for your electric garage door should largely depend on how fast you want your door to open and how heavy the door is. For most residential houses, you will need a motor that can provide 0.5hp. For single garage doors, 0.25hp can do a decent job more so if you don’t mind the opening speeds.

The frequency of lubrication should depend on the number of times you open your garage door in a day. If you open your garage door much more often in one day, you will need to lubricate more regularly. We recommend lubricating every after one to three months based on how frequently you open your garage door. But if your garage door starts making noise while opening, you may have to lubricate it immediately to avoid any possible damages.

Yes, we do repair all types of garage doors. Whether you have a sectional, roller, or any other design of the garage door, we can fix it in case it has any issues. You can contact us, and we shall send a team of technicians to your house to inspect and determine the extent of repair required and thereafter give you a quote. We also do maintain garage doors to enhance their performance and durability.

A door that is installed properly has the following features;

  • Doesn’t make noise while being opened or closed – it simply makes a smooth transition once you press the switch.
  • It moves in a regulated manner. If you notice your garage door is going up and down at a very high speed, then there are high chances it wasn’t correctly installed.
  • No vibrations during opening and closing. When all parts of your garage door are well aligned, you shouldn’t experience any form of vibration while opening or closing the door.

If you install an electric garage door, you won’t have to lock after it has closed because it has lock functionality that works automatically when the door reaches the closing position. It is only manual doors that need to be locked with a padlock or any other locking system after closing it.

The gauge number represents the thickness of the steel. The lower the gauge number, the thicker, heavier, and stronger the steel. For people who need to have strong garage doors, you will need to go for garage doors made out of steel with a lower gauge number. For residential houses, we recommend going for steel material that has a gauge number of about 24.

Yes, it is possible to add a couple of components to your manual door and eventually make it electric. However, we need to first inspect and confirm that your door can easily be converted to electric without incurring a lot of costs. Contact us, and we send technicians to your home to assess and then give you the quote after.

The batteries that you will find in your remote will usually not be reusable. The duration of these batteries depends on the type you use and how frequently you open your garage door. Batteries from a good brand can a month or more, even if you use your remote frequently.

For better security, it is always better to have the truck of your roller garage door inside the garage instead of outside. However, if your house design or space doesn’t allow having it inside, it is also fine to have it installed outside. If the track is meant to be outside, it is designed to be strong and more robust to meet the standards of security that we need to be at.

For your garage door to last longer, you need to clean it regularly, lubricate the moving parts, and also make sure faults are always fixed in time. Automatic garage doors even need more attention since most of their parts are quite expensive compared to manual ones.
